Following the release of Battlefield 2042, the IP’s approach has to return back to formula over at DICE. In just 7 seasons of post-launch support, the developer is transitioning to production on the next project. After learning that developer Ridgeline Games would be shuttering – the effort to develop the next Battlefield story mode – new developments on the next title emerged.
From CEO Andrew Wilson, he elaborated that Battlefield will be returning in an “Entirely New Way” unlike previously. In a separate instance, Wilson also expressed that the new title is to also be a “tremendous live service” for Electronic Arts. The comment also coincides with another instance that was reported this year. From Insider Gaming, the next Battlefield projected to release in 2025 will feature a free-to-play battle royale mode upon release.
Now this week speaking to IGN, Vince Zampella – the current general manager at DICE – shared a new development on the approach for the next Battlefield release. Primarily, Zampella expressed that the team is striving to achieve what made early 2010 releases Battlefield 3 & Battlefield 4 so successful.
I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we’ll see where it goes from there. But I think for me, it’s that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days. So I think it’s nostalgic for players, for me, for the teams even. Those are kind of the heyday…although I would say 1942 also.
“I’d rather have nice, dense, really nice, well-designed play spaces. Some of them are really good. I can’t wait for you to see some of them,” Zampella elaborated on the direction map design is going for the new game. Reflecting on Battlefield 2042, he also confirmed that 64-player lobbies are to return. “Yeah, the 128 player, did it make it more fun? Like…doing the number for the sake of the number doesn’t make any sense.”
He also went ahead confirming specialists will not be returning in the future: “ I don’t know what the rationale was, but for me, it’s like the team tried something new. You have to applaud that effort. Not everybody liked it, but you got to try things. It didn’t work. It didn’t fit. Specialist will not be coming back. So classes are kind of at the core of Battlefield, and we’re going back to that. […] We want it to be good out of the gate.”
Are you excited for the next Battlefield from these new changes?
