Across the spectrum of live-service endeavors, it appears that Sony Interactive Entertainment is slowly undoing any promises it has in this venture. While it’s only success so far has been Helldivers 2 primarily, the firm did get cold feet with the historically disappointment that was Concord. Shuttered in two weeks after its release, the publisher eventually pulled the plug on the developer altogether. Of course, Factions II as well
Additionally, there are still others on the way. From those properly announced, there is Fairgame$ – a heist shooter which was previously reported to be testing well internally. And, Marathon: though delayed to 2025, the project could be the make or break for PlayStation’s future in live-service. Not to mention the recent string of titles from other PlayStation Studio teams that were closed recently as well.
According to a new report online, it appears that an alleged Horizon MMO title, Project Skyline, is now no more. As per the previously announced NCSOFT partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game was in development with PC & mobile in mind. While Ruliweb denounces any connection to Horizon, leaker @Kurakasis on X discloses quite a lot on the matter, and with receipts.
The collection of info from the insider does align with prior details released by Guerrilla Games also. In 2022, the developer disclosed a roadmap of its development plans for Horizon in a job posting. Alongside a third installment and spin-off co-op title, there is also an ‘Online Project’ that was in development as well. That was an internal effort with NCSOFT’s involvement later established in the partnership.
Although PlayStation is not falling through the cracks in terms of market return, it is losing a significant amount on the gamble for live-service. As more & more projects appear to reach the chopping block, the firm still stands firm in its decision to chase after the new market. Previously, the firm hired Meta & EA executives to spearhead its mobile effort. You can read the full report by heading here.
