These past few months have been questionable as for what or how Nintendo will be breaking the news for the coming summer as E3 is cancelled. Even more, the company was previously reported to be shelving any possibility to host its own respected online Direct presentation as well which only narrowed the chances of receiving new information on upcoming properties from the company.

But in an abrupt reveal trailer that went live today, Nintendo shared the next installment for the Paper Mario series. Titled Paper Mario: The Origami King, the game follows a new journey in the Super Mario universe as the world has been overtaken by three-dimensional origami creations asking for our same-named protagonist to conform to the new style of art.

You can watch the full trailer in the video below:

The titular, overarching menace King Olly has taken control of the Mushroom Kingdom and our two-sided hero must team up with a new friend Olivia to recapture his home and free his encaptured friends. Reading more on the game’s official website, we learn some details regarding the new gameplay features implemented into the approaching project.

Firstly, the thousand-fold arms that we witness in the trailer is a new ability which allows Mario to grasp far away objects or manipulate the paper-folded world he now inhabits. With the introduction of Olivia, we now have confirmation that Partners will fully be making a return to the series since 2007’s Super Paper Mario. The most interesting detail is the new ‘ring-based’ combat system that comes off to be very complex which we will need to see more before deciding how the game will play for fans.

A niché little nod to Metroid is also found at the end of the trailer as a paper origami helmet falls on his head and begins running back and forth. “He certainly looks intimidating! Is he..battling something?” Olivia asks at the end of the trailer.

While we now have confirmation on the next project for the Super Mario series, it is still uncertain if there is more planned to release this year. With it being the 35th for the titular franchise, it was expected more projects would release. Those in particular is Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D World, and Paper Mario 64 rumored from November.

Are you excited to play a new Paper Mario title after Wii U’s Color Splash in 2016?

Paper Mario: The Origami King will ship for Nintendo Switch on July 17, 2020.
