While chatter continues to revolve around Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, it should be noted that social media conglomerate Facebook is also honing in on the video game market as well. Already establishing Facebook Gaming, its version to streaming games is decent established in contrast to Twitch. The firm in collaboration with Microsoft shifted its focus to the platform following the closure of Mixer late last year.
But, Facebook is also reaching its arms to users with its own cloud streaming service. In October, Facebook officially unveiled the free-to-play feature with more than a handful of titles available for all Facebook users to sample. But, 2021 will be where Facebook Gaming’s service truly evolves into something bigger, the company issued at the time.
Elsewhere, its acquired firm Oculus is to host its own showcase later this month. While the firm typically features announcements at its annual Oculus Connect, the company decided to go the virtual route with a livestreamed presentation set for next week.
“This is our first event wholly dedicated to the stellar games across the Oculus Platform,” Oculus writes in anticipation for next week’s showcase. “You can expect new updates to fan-favorite titles, never-before-seen footage from some unreleased games, and a few surprises in store.”
Most interesting is that developer Ready At Dawn will be present at the aforementioned Oculus Showcase. Recognized for its work on 2015’s The Order: 1886, the game studio is also noted for its work on virtual reality titles like Lone Echo. Enough that the developer was up right acquired by Facebook just this past summer.
In hopes of what else might be present at the show is the upcoming Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed virtual reality projects. Previously announced through a deal between Oculus & Ubisoft, the venture is to help extend the universes through new platforms – and VR happens to be that opportunity.
