When it comes to the new PlayStation VR 2 headset, the coming device sets a new standard for the peripheral. Compared to its predecessor which released for the PlayStation 4, we learned the new PlayStation 5 variant will offer features like room scan and cinematic mode for example. Additionally, Sony Interactive Entertainment pressed the new system is set to release in early 2023 which is not too far away.

Atop of that, highly-anticipated games are confirmed for the new hardware. That includes Firewall Ultra, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – Enhanced Edition, alongside some third-party titles including The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, Resident Evil 8, and No Man’s Sky. But, there is some disappointing news regarding additional games.

In the recent episode of the Official PlayStation Podcast, Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president of platform experience Hideaki Nishino confirmed that the new headset will not feature any form of backwards compatibility for original PlayStation VR games at launch, Gematsu transcribed.

PlayStation VR games are not compatible with PlayStation VR2 because PlayStation VR2 is designed to be a truly next-generation virtual reality experience. PlayStation VR2 has much more advanced features like an all-new controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as I’ve said, and inside-out tracking in it, 3D audio is coming together, 4K HDR of course… so this means that making games for PlayStation VR2 requires a whole different approach than the original PlayStation VR. These features actually enable developers to create worlds that feel more vivid and alive, and bring players closer to the experience than ever. I believe that.

However, this is not to say there might not be support in the future. In a similar statement from President & CEO Jim Ryan, he confirmed that the PlayStation 5 would not offer the feature for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 titles. But, the firm certainly found a workaround with the PlayStation Plus revamp which launched at the start of the summer.

In other Sony news, a report on Insider Gaming suggests the PlayStation firm is preparing a new revision of the PlayStation 5 for this September. The new iteration will remove the internal disc drive altogether, but will give the option to bundle or sell separately the accessory to still play physical media.
