Sega Celebrates April Fools Day With (Real) ‘The Murder Of Sonic the Hedgehog’ Visual Novel Free On Steam

Over the course of the past year, Sonic the Hedgehog has faced new releases to keep fans occupied after a few years away from the table. In that, summer offered Sonic Origins: a compilation of legacy titles that kicked off the genre. More recently, Sonic Team revealed that the game is receiving a new ‘Plus’ edition which includes Amy Rose as a playable character for the full game coming later this June.

Additionally, many cannot skim over the launch of Sonic Frontiers. While linear, 3D entries sufficed for many years, the developer went in a new direction with a Breath of the Wild-like open-world experience this past November. The first wave of post-launch content went live recently adding a Juke Box Mode alongside two challenge modes to the main game at no additional charge.

In a new surprise reveal this week, it is discovered that Sega & Sonic Team are participating in April Fool’s Day with a Sonic murder mystery. No joke, on Steam a new title ‘The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog’ is available for free right now. You can watch the launch trailer in the video below:

“It’s Amy Rose’s birthday, and she’s hosting a murder mystery party on the Mirage Express! When Sonic the Hedgehog becomes the game’s victim, everyone is off to get to the bottom of things. However, something feels a bit off – is this really an innocent game or is something more sinister afoot?” the synopsis on Steam reads for the shadowdrop title.

“Interrogate some of your favorite characters as you figure out what happened to Sonic. Play as a new character who is starting their first day working on the Mirage Express, and meet the kind Conductor who is finally retiring from his long run with the train! […] Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Mirage Express, featuring fully hand-drawn landscapes and characters.”
