Sega Focuses On Its Future And That Means Leaving Behind Hopes On New Mini Consoles Too, Report Reveals

When it comes to Sega currently, the firm is embracing its legacy with the upcoming plans to reestablish beloved Genesis & Dreamcast franchises. As part of this ambition, games Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage are all confirmed for this. Even more, this could certainly expand with Sega even considering a subscription service to explore more of its history with classic titles from the publisher.

Already, Sega of America & Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi has revealed his intention for this new push for Sega’s vault of IPs is to reignite the ‘alternative’ flavor that Sega once donned against its competition before the millennium. Additionally, Sega is even considering taking on Hollywood’s Disney as well with its current transmedia success too.

As of Sega in the hardware space, it did release the Sega Genesis mini back in 2019. But, fans were hoping this trend would also reach other hardware like the Sega Saturn or even the Dreamcast. But speaking to The Guardian, Utsumi disclosed that mini is not the future for Sega in this ‘New Energy’ approach for the firm.

“I’m not going for the Mini direction. It’s not me. I want to embrace modern gamers.” Sega later clarified that there are no plans for more Minis,’ he expresses. Adding: “We are not a retro company. We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for.”

This is not the first time that the Dreamcast Mini was considered a hopeless dream. Last year, YouTuber Adam Koralik denounced the chances for the hardware to be realized. What Sega is planning is still unclear. Just last month, the firm did go ahead with delisting a large sum of its legacy title over on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo.
