
Sega’s push for transmedia content continues to bring more to fans of its library of properties. For roughly half a decade, Sonic the Hedgehog has been the glowing example of this with a third film planned to release later this December. Additionally, a live-action Like a Dragon TV series is planned to air later this October on Amazon Prime Video as well.
Beyond that, Sega also greenlit an animated Golden Axe television show with Comedy Central with Paramount+ to air the new series. Sega for a while now has shown more transparency to other IPs also entertaining TV/film as well. In one interview, the publisher elaborated that its arms are extended to other projects with Persona especially on the radar too.
This week, Deadline reports the next project for Sega to hit theaters is Shinobi. As part of a new arrangement with Universal Pictures, the new project is a live-action film focused on the original cabinet title. Ken Kobayashi (Sunny, Move On) is said to be attached to the production to pen the screenplay for the video game adapted film.
Moreover, Marc Platt (La La Land, Cruella) and Adam Siegel (Drive, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) are set to produce under Marc Platt Productions. Story Kitchen is a also producing with Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog 2) with Sega’s Toru Nakahara. What’s more, Michael L. Goldberg (Stash House) will be an executive producer alongside Timothy I. Stevenson (Rival Speak).
Sega’s continued push on its legacy IPs is reflective of its ‘New Energy’ project that was announced in 2023. IPs including Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio are being remade for newer hardware. You can read the full report by heading here.
