It was just over a week ago that Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima shipped for PlayStation 4 users. The title sits as one of the last major releases on the platform and is presumed to be a major seller of the current-generation system with the upcoming PlayStation 5 system scheduled to arrive later this year. Despite the game’s quiet development, Ghost of Tsushima has been a very anticipated project since its conception back in 2017.
According to a new announcement from Sony Interactive Entertainment, the publisher shares that the Feudal Japan-set project has earned the ranks as the top-selling new IP for the firm in history. In the first three days of release, Ghost of Tsushima has sold 2.4 million units globally, Sony discloses in a recent tweet.
Reflecting on older software that has shipped this generation, other PlayStation 4 exclusive titles have broken records for respected genres. Such as Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man where the title earned its reputation as the top-selling superhero title. The 2018 release obtained met this milestone toppling Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham City which held that achievement since 2011.
Other properties from the Sony Interactive Entertainment arsenal has also broken records premature to its retail release. It was reported back in early 2018 that Santa Monica Studios’ God of War became the most pre-ordered title on Sony’s storefront. This was a surprising discovery following how influential the release of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was back in 2016.
Most recently, it was reported that Naughty Dog’s The last of Us Part II in the same time span for Ghost of Tsushima’s achievement exceeded 4 million copies in sales. You can read the report in full by heading here.
