Although Microsoft went head first with integrating its first-party releases to PC in the past console lifecycle, many were questioning the motive to pursue an objective that could potentially devalue its hardware. But, it was evident that Microsoft was trying to grow its platform and strengthen its reach on Windows 10 & Steam. And now with xCloud, the story continues with even more avenues for the Xbox company to enter.
But, Sony Interactive Entertainment also appears to be trailing behind the same pursuit. Already with the PC versions of Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, and Days Gone this week, it is evident the firm want to reach a broader audience. And this is only to stem further with more games underway, Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO stated then.
Years prior, Epic Games offered to foot the bill for the PlayStation company. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment, of course, did not take the bait. In leaked documents from the Apple V. Epic Games case earlier in May that surfaced on ResetEra, the price listed ranged around $200 million to account for 4 to 6 games in total.
The document already phrased negotiations with Nintendo on the matter to be a “non-starter” – which is virtually a given by default. When approaching Microsoft, that grew complicated with the already established Xbox Game Pass for PC which did not materialize either. Elsewhere in the case work earlier on, it was revealed Epic Games purposefully walled a xCloud version of Fortnite using the same argument.
Returning to the topic concerning Sony Interactive Entertainment, the firm is pursuing its first-party releases on PlayStation 5 with a similar weight in green. In that, the company is reported to be forking over more or less $200 million for its efforts to unique IPs for PlayStation 5 later down the road.
Additionally, Sony Interactive Entertainment is also pushing funding towards a dedicated application for Discord. Through a minor investment stake into the communications company, versions for PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5 is to arrive sometime in 2022. You can read the full report by heading here.
