In the swift up and coming for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation 5, it was not long before the newest iteration on the market approached the 5 million mark. By December of last year, the PlayStation 5 was reported to have sold roughly 4.5 million units then. More interesting, launch title Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales sold a very close 4.1 million in that timeframe then.
While the game was a featured title for the new console, it remained a cross-generation release and is likely swelled in sales over on PlayStation 4 thanks to limited quantities to purchase the newest PlayStation. Despite that fact atop of resellers, the PlayStation 5 closes in on its first year with roughly more units sold than the lifetime number of Wii U consoles purchased according to NPD Group.
To remark on the first year of PlayStation, Sony Interactive Entertainment lists the top ten most played titles on PlayStation 5. You can read the full list below:

In the same post, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan makes a statement on the events that followed the PlayStation 5’s release. “So much has happened in just one year from the day we lit up landmarks and other iconic places all over the world to mark the arrival of PS5. Incredible games such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, and Deathloop launched.
“He adds, “SIE acquired the talented development studios Bluepoint Games, Firesprite, Housemarque, and Nixxes. We revealed our next-generation VR system for PS5. And most recently, we’ve unveiled new footage and exciting updates for upcoming titles such as God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West all from PlayStation Studios, and announced Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake during our September showcase.”
Noted on the recent success of the PlayStation 5 trumping one console from Nintendo in unit sales, the system also overtakes the current Nintendo Switch in ongoing purchases as well. After 33 consecutive weeks, the PlayStation 5 in September ended that record which started back in November 2019. You can read the full report by heading here.
