While promises from Team Sonic continued to echo from the initial E3 2019 statement made by studio head Takashi Iizuka for a 2021 release, it appears that not everything could be met for that now learning. Although the Japanese developer did go on to unveil a brief teaser for the next Sonic the hedgehog game last month, the title is now paved to ship later on in 2022 instead.

However, more information happened to seep through the cracks more than Sega would have liked. In that, the new game is told to be titled ‘Sonic Rangers’ according to a now-updated press release from Sega. Additionally, one source that other industry insider corroborate the authenticity also goes to back the claim atop of other finer details on the project as well.

As for the scope of the next entry for the series, Iizuka when speaking to Sonic Stadium explains that he wants the game to leave a lasting impression similar to how Sonic Adventure did for fans more than two decades ago.

The new title in development is progressing towards a 2022 release, so I can’t really call it an Anniversary title. However, Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team.

Iizuka also goes on to remark on the challenges the team faces or the new game with its aim to shape the future of the series. “Since this title is still mid-development there is nothing I can speak to, but I did want to say that the development team has been spending their time to do something new and challenging.” He continues, “Through a lot of trial and error the team is looking to present to everyone a new Sonic game, and I hope your warm support of their work can motivate them to really deliver against that challenge.”

Previously, notable leaker Zippo went on to indicate the legitimacy of Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2 remakes that were once orchestrated by Sega prior. Howbeit, the project fell through and did not make much progress evidently. You can read the full report by heading here.
