It was not too long ago that publisher Ubisoft held its second Ubisoft Forward showcase to present some of its biggest and most anticipated projects arriving just on the brink of the next-generation consoles. Among the details spared for titles like Watch Dogs: Legion and Roller Champions, Ubisoft Quebec properly featured Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Set during the downfall for the age’s Greek mythological gods, you play as Demigod Fenyx and must use your wits to retake the throne for the fallen legends and become your own in the new fable to be. The firm distributed a new trailer alongside a gameplay demo for the game disclosing more on the subject matter of how the game will operate when it arrives this coming December.
In process for the game’s feature during the publisher-held show, Ubisoft disclosed that the initial titling ‘Gods & Monsters’ would now be associated with the current title, Immortals Fenyx Rising. Howbeit, the firm did not disclose the reasoning as for the name change. It wasn’t until this week that reports surfaced suggesting the firm made the decision based on legal butting with Monster Energy.
Back in April, Monster Energy filed an opposition claim for Gods & Monsters which suggested that the game’s title would interfere with marketing in the gaming industry – including esports endeavors and sponsored events. However, according to Ubisoft, the firm shares with Video Game Chronicles that the decision was swayed by a choice on the creative path that aligned with internal development.
The name change for Immortals Fenyx Rising reflects a creative decision and is not a result of legal matters. As stated in the past, the extra development time allowed us to push our initial vision even further and explore new avenues for the game. As this vision was coming to life and developing a more mature tone, we felt the game needed a new name to better reflect those changes.
While it is evident as to why there might have been conflict between both parties, it is reported that Ubisoft likely would have won the opposition made by Monster Energy. But again, the creative drive to pursue a different name for the title ultimately directed the entry in a new direction with less legal drama with the energy drink titan.
Elsewhere recently, Ubisoft also used the pitch of creative pursuit to defend the appearance for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. In that, the firm shared the lesser desirable look for the 202-scheduled game was intended to protect the character of the original 2003 entry. You can read the full report by heading here.
