In the last week or more, Sony has been handling more revealing details on the coming PlayStation 5 which came as a surprise seeing how secretive the firm has been regarding the next-generation console these last few months. But despite what we’ve grown accustomed to, the company is transitioning to a more transparent approach finally which is surely a good sign for fans planning to get their system later this holiday season.
In that, one of the matters that grabbed plenty of eyes was the official first look at the box art for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. But more importantly, we also got what the case will officially look like for all PlayStation 5-supported titles. And it was not too long after that did developer Counterplay Games, the team behind Godfall, shared an image of the game’s cover for the PlayStation 5.
This generation – Sony shares to be bringing more of a resemblance to the coming console itself with a white header on the top portion of the box with the ‘PS5’ logo printed on the cover. Now this weekend following the recent Ubisoft Forward, we also have the first glimpse of the Xbox Series X case as well. The reveal comes from Massive Entertainment’s Anchel Labena where the studio Producer tweeted the image of the Xbox Series X cover for Watch Dogs: Legion.
Taken from the image, the new case holds plenty of standing characteristics from the Xbox One game case: the green-dyed case is returning and the same-colored header has also been preserved for the coming generational system. But what differentiates this case in particular is that Microsoft to differentiate the game for current and next-generation Xbox is the “Optimized for Xbox Series X” sticker on the front side of the cover.
The image shown was originally introduced during this past May’s Xbox 20/20 for the showcase, but Microsoft is now utilizing it for its new console’s case as well. Even more, consumers can also read the top left corner to spare what systems it will support. Specifically for this coming transition later this year, we will see plenty of titles that support both Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
Most notably is that the top portion of the case is that it does not read ‘Xbox Series X’, but simply “Xbox”. This was an approach that Microsoft clarified on the coming unit shortly after its announcement last year as the Series X is only a model as part of a line of Xbox. With this new system being a rebranding of the Xbox name, Microsoft has been very transparent on the titling since its conception. The inclusive boxing for Xbox Series X games is quite tasteful and most importantly does not break off from recognizing the brand.
However, the one criticism that can be given is that there is plenty happening on the case that is not relevant to the game. While it is simplistic and easy to understand – the sticker does cover a decent portion of the cover which could interfere with the artwork developers decide to use for their physical copies of games in the future.
