Earlier in 2025, we witnessed a consolidation of talent under Electronic Arts. The publisher pushed its talent of other IPs to put new projects on ice like Need for Speed as developer Criterion Games new focus is for Battlefield. And while many are excited for the next Battlefield, it is not for the sacrifice for other franchises that are also overdue for a new release.

More recently, developer Codemasters announced that it is to step back from its WRC series in a recent blog post; scaring many fans of what might come of the team. “For now, we are pausing development plans on future rally titles. Rest assured, EA SPORTS WRC will continue to be available for existing and new players. We hope it remains a source of joy, excitement, and the thrill of rally racing,” it wrote.

Now according to a new update from Codemasters in a statement to Video Game Chronicle, the recent announcement comes with new layoffs at the developer. This is likely in tow with the update at Respawn Entertainment which led to the cancelation of its internal project ‘R7’: an extraction shooter which was shaping to fill the shoes of Titanfall 3.

“As a business, we are constantly evolving to meet the growing needs of our players and driving greater focus across our portfolio. This has led us to look at reducing some roles, while we redeploy as many as possible against our strategic priorities,” a spokesperson on behalf of Codemasters said in a statement to Video Game Chronicle.

From our review for EA Sports WRC, Rectify Gaming scored it a 9.1/10; saying it “is a comprehensive package for rally enthusiasts, delivering an unparalleled level of realism, customization, and content variety that sets a new standard in the world of rally gaming.” You can read the full review by heading here.
