It was previous rumored that the Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: Stick of Truth developer Obsidian Entertainment was on the brink of being acquired from Xbox Owner Microsoft. Announced at the X018 event in Mexico City, Microsoft not only confirmed the rumor, but also revealed that InXile Entertainment will be joining the roster of studio’s under the company’s belt.
InXile Entertainment took many by surprise that the studio currently working on Wasteland 3 will now be part of the Microsoft family. The California-based developer recently released Torment: Tides of Numenera last year and aims for the third installment of the Wasteland series to release in 2019. It wasn’t specified if the upcoming RPG will be a platform exclusive when the official date is revealed.
The more veteran viewed Obsidian Entertainment will continue to work on their currently unannounced projects alongside the Wasteland developer. We do already know that the possibility of a New Vegas sequel is out of the picture, what come next from the developer will be worth the wait after viewing their track record.
Microsoft mentioned that though the two newly acquired studios have similar characteristics for the games both produce, the two studios “will continue to operate autonomously with their unique talents, IP and expertise”. It’s best to notice that the two RPG-heavy developers were focused to bring more to the PC platform, as stated by Microsoft in the blog post.
