One of Xbox’s biggest offerings to its consumer base is the wide range of support for backwards compatibility. For almost a decade now, the program to enable users to return to older titles through both digital as well as physical means has remained a staple which competitors has yet to emulate. Despite that, the project has been on ice since 2021 as its last batch of games rolled out during the platform’s 20th anniversary then.

In extension to the program, Microsoft utilizing its hardware has also injected modern enhancements to legacy titles. Through the FPS Boost feature, users can relive classic games with new refresh rates on Xbox One & Xbox 360 titles too. Given by the title of the feature, this extends to outputs of 60hz & 120hz. Internally, Microsoft has also acknowledged the impact of the service and continues to put preservation first going forward.

According to a new report from Windows Central, Microsoft has enlisted a new effort in its preservation initiative for the future generations of Xbox. An internal email sent out elaborates on Xbox putting forward its users with a strong hand in backwards compatibility.

We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself. We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy.

Sarah Bond, Xbox President

Of course the biggest question remains – when will we hear about this effort from Xbox? Although there is no provided window for users to see the official word on this new preservation push, a recent report does point to a very plausible chance for such. In that, it is indicated by The Verge that an Xbox Games Showcase is to take place later this summer on June 9th.

Elsewhere, a new report surfaced this week disclosing a separate project underway at Xbox internally. The Verge reports that Microsoft is in development of a new AI chatbot for users on the platform. Since then Microsoft has confirmed the effort is the pipeline. You can read the full report by heading here.

What do you take away from Bond’s statement?
