Come this fall will bring yet another annual release for the Call of Duty franchise. And while players flock to the newest game from Treyarch – Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 – users do not anticipate the space this new title will be asking for. Not only that, but some of the nonsensical aspect for this new entry. In that, despite being 100+GB at least, playing the single player will require being connected to the internet.

However, many players are anticipating a return to form for the series with Black Ops 6. The first being over a dozen promised maps for the multiplayer. Additionally, there is also the mention of the classic prestige system making a comeback for the 2024 release. Atop of that, round-based Zombies is also planned for this game come October this fall.

And with the anticipation for the upcoming beta this month, Activision has an update on how Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is structured compared to previous releases. It was confirmed in a recent blog post that the file size will be noticeably smaller than prior games. That is mostly thanks for not requiring to install Warzone as part of the base game.

As we look ahead to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, we’ve been working on ways to improve the Call of Duty experience by optimizing menu navigation and offering smaller and more customized downloads, plus other benefits for your Call of Duty library. We’ve heard your feedback, and along with our own testing and learnings, have worked to optimize the way players access and download Call of Duty. This begins by revamping the experience formerly known as Call of Duty HQ.

“To give players more control over what they’re downloading, we are decoupling the download of Call of Duty: Warzone from other titles. When you purchase an annual title, you will only download the files for that game by default. On the free-to-play side, players can ‘opt-in’ to get Call of Duty: Warzone when they’re downloading a new annual title or simply download it separately at any point in time,” the blog post adds.

“The choice is yours. Flexibility and choice matter. We want to give players the choice to download each Call of Duty, including Call of Duty: Warzone, when and how they wish.” Even more, promises for the current Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is said to take effect in its next major update. “In part of an ongoing effort to reduce file and download sizes, we’re expanding our usage of texture streaming, starting with the Season 5 Reloaded update.

“With these capabilities, we can cycle content that is less frequently used by players to a streaming cache, avoiding the need to download it directly to your device’s storage. Going forward, more content will be included in this cache. With this change, you may see older content that briefly appears at a lower quality until the streaming cache has fully loaded. The resolution of content streamed from the cache will depend on what setting you select for this feature.”

Are you surprised by this change from Activision?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launches October 25, 2024, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
