In the realm of virtual reality headgear, Meta is soon to face some competition as a new tech giant joins the battlefield. While the Facebook-acquired Oculus has been fully embraced into the Meta rebrand, the firm has also relabeled its products as well with the Meta Quest 2. And so forth for later additions as well.
Last fall, the Meta Quest Pro shipped with a $1,500 price tag for hardened users of the medium. And that was only one fractions of what is to come. Last week, the Meta Quest 3 was revealed costing $500 for the new headset. And as Meta continues to stockpile more devices, Apple is planning to offer its own headset according to previous reports on the new device.
From a report at UploadVR, Apple is planning to officially showcase its new headset during this week’s WWDC23 presentation. On the official website for the showcase, Apple added in ‘Code New Worlds’ which is a project name for the new device. Subsequently, UploadVR also speculates the reveal for the headset with its own staff invited to the show on Monday.
In regards to previous reports on codename ‘N301’ internally at Apple, the headset is to be a virtual reality/augmented reality device. Featuring a high-resolution display, the headset is said to use external cameras to scan environments alongside obstacles and even people. The report also noted another prototype device intended for longer use was also being worked on at Apple. The prototype was also said to feature transition lenses when in use.
Earlier this February, Sony Interactive Entertainment also rolled out the PlayStation VR 2. The headset came with a slew of new, exclusive releases to showcase the capabilities of the new device. With improved resolution, new controllers, and more features, PlayStation plans to support the headset even more than its predecessor.
