Rewinding the clock back to 2020, at the time it was a continue rumor mill for what Xbox Game Studios’ The Initiative could be working on. But what appeared to be most tangible was a new installment or complete rework for Perfect Dark. A LinkedIn profile of a former developer shared as much with his efforts on spy technology. It was that December at The Game Awards did Perfect Dark officially get unveiled at the show.
However, the wait time has been nearly two years with only updates leaving the game in a questionable state. In fall 2021, The Initiative shared a joint partnership with Crystal Dynamics to work on the project. But, a story from Kotaku peels away a story of poor team management and top-down leadership at the Santa Monica studio which left the game in a poor position.
According to a recent financial report conference call which Video Game Chronicles transcribed, the project is actually proceeding in favor of the team – at least said by Crystal Dynamics that is.
We’re working on the iconic Perfect Dark game and the project is going extremely well. What’s been so promising internally is seeing how our team took on this opportunity, a new way of working. If we think about the future of how we work, collaboration across studios, across time zones, across geographies, across different companies, will all become more common, so it is great to see the team at The Initiative and our team across Crystal studios working so well together.
Phil Rogers, Crystal Dynamics/Eidos-Montreal CEO
Over at Crystal Dynamics, the team is in the midst of a new transition of leadership. In that, Square Enix decided to sell the Tomb Raider/Marvel’s Avengers developer to Embracer Group. The deal cost $300 million with the firm handed over including Eidos-Montreal & Square Enix Montreal. This arrangement also included popular IPs noting Sleeping Dogs, Thief, and Deus Ex.
As for other work Crystal Dynamics is occupied helming, the team is busy at work on a new Tomb Raider title. More interestingly is that the project is to bridge the series into Unreal Engine 5. And from past games alongside the current impressive results from the latest suite, this will be a landmark release later down the road for the series. You can read the full report by heading here.
