While the original founding of Xbox Game Studios’ original Santa Monica-based team The Initiative was presented to be a collaboration of like-minded veterans from the video game industry, the scale of anticipation from the team swelled learning that its first game will be a reboot for Perfect Dark. However, it will be sometime until the game officially delivers with its retelling of the beloved IP from Rare.
Since the inception of the game, little has been revealed from The Initiative nor Microsoft on the matters of the project. Previously it was told that the team welcomed former Godfall Senior Environment Artist Alex Beddows as he receives the same role at the new firm. Additionally, Tomb Raider team Crystal Dynamics announces a new collaboration with The Initiative to work on Perfect Dark as well.
However, a report from Video Game Chronicles tells that the culture at The Initiative is the reason for the long wait for the game and rising departure of development leadership at the game studio. Speaking with departees of The Initiative described working at the team to be “fast and furious” which “heavily affected” the pace the game is being worked on.
But, The Initiative studio head Darrell Gallagher spoke with Video Game Chronicles giving a statement in response to the “top-down” work style previous The Initiative developers explained to the outlet.
It’s no small task to build a studio and reinvent a beloved franchise. In creating The Initiative, we set out to leverage co-development partnerships to achieve our ambitions, and we’re really excited about all the progress we’re seeing with our relationship with Crystal Dynamics.
In this journey, it’s not uncommon for there to be staffing changes, especially during a time of global upheaval over the last two years, and there’s plenty more work in front of us to deliver a fantastic Perfect Dark experience to our players We wish all our former colleagues the very best, and I’m confident in the team we have in place, the new talent joining, and we can’t wait to share more with the fans.
Elaborating further on the exodus of staff at The Initiative, sources that spoke with Video Game Chronicles expressed surprise at the inverted work culture at the studio despite what was promised from the application and Microsoft. Even more comes to baffle those realizing the amount of leniency from the Xbox firm with the little progress made on Perfect Dark. Describing the game to be moving “painfully” slow.
One former employee stated, “Making games is hard enough, let alone when you feel like you can’t get through to people making the decisions that affect everyone,” explaining how the structure of the management has resulted with The Initiative. Noted, staff did tell the publication that the introduction of Crystal Dynamics sparked a soft reboot on production with its staff filling the gaps of leaving employees as The Initiative.
Perhaps the story drawing more attention will receive a response from Xbox Game Studios leadership to interject on the matters directly at The Initiative. The firm earlier this year made a similar move for the overall industry with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard and the forming of Microsoft Gaming.
Similarly, the same situation is happening over at Xbox Game Studios Rare. Although there are not complaints at the team for its work culture alike The Initiative, development on Everwild is progressing at the same pace due to uncertainty for the scope of the game, it was previously reported.
