Developer Techland, the studio which founded the Dead Island IP is now hard at work on a sequel for a different zombie-centered, open-world sandbox, Dying light 2. But while the hopes of a second installment for Dead Island is not being developed by the initial team, Deep Silver, the publisher that owns the rights to the series, has another team working on the project.

Dambuster Studios is the current team responsible for the upcoming game that continues to sit in development hell since 2015. I say current as the project was issued to two other teams previously: Yager Developments and Sumo Digital. Which also explains half of a decade waiting for the game’s release, many fans of the original releases already given up on any chances of the game releasing altogether.

But in a new tweet posted by the publisher recently, the firm says otherwise. When pressing that the game is not in the works anymore and that fans should move onto the Techland project by one Twitter user, the German publisher tells that it “wouldn’t be so sure about that.”

But this is not the first instance that the game is not dead, pun intended. Dating back to 2017 where Eurogamer questioned the position of the game at the time, Deep Silver issued that the project is still underway. “Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital [at the time], and we are excited by the progress the team are making.” Secondly, the firm reassured the game is still underway through a job listing for the title the game and its setting in the description.

But in most recent relevancy to Dead Island 2, users uncovered a demo for the game predating back to when Yager Developments was still leading progress on the game. While many of the game is expected to change since the initial announcement, it is cool to see something preserved and even sampled by fans years later on.
