Looking at the time jump between Undertale to the arrival of Deltarune – Chapter 1, fans can be patient for the release of Toby Fox no matter what it is. Since the inception of the new episodic series from the creator of Sans, it was very clear that Deltarune was nowhere close to being finished. And it was only the previous fall in 2021 that Chapter 2 arrived for both PC & Nintendo Switch respectively.

As for what lies ahead, Toby Fox did press on this earlier on in the summer. In a newsletter update, Toby Fox addressed that progress is already moving well on Chapter 3. He even went on to say that effort for Chapter 4 and beyond is already being pieced along as well in good spirit of the series’ further support. Recently, Toby Fox has made an update on the approach for the standalone chapters behind Deltarune.

In that, Toby Fox announced that future installments will be premium, paid additions. Noted, he clarifies this is to commence starting after Chapter 4. As for the upcoming Chapter 3, it is nearing the finish line, he touted.

So, now that Chapter 3 is nearing completion… I think it’s a good time to re-discuss how we will release DELTARUNE for purchase. My original plan was to release Chapter 3, 4, and 5 together. However, the finish line of Chapter 5 is still pretty far off… and I don’t think anybody really wants to wait that long to release anything. Especially me.

“So, new strategy: No more waiting for Chapter 5. Instead, we are going to focus on putting DELTARUNE out for purchase once we finish Chapter 4. That should make everything a bit more reasonable! Chapter 4 already has a very substantial amount of cutscenes and enemy work done. Also, I’ve hired a new producer whose entire job it will be to speed up the overall game development for future chapters. So, I feel very optimistic about the next steps of this project.”

Toby Fox finished by sharing in the newsletter: “That being said though, I think I’m going to pause on more detailed development updates for now. Instead, I’ll just let you guys know if the development is getting close to completion, or if something funny happens.”

What is your thoughts on Toby Fox finally inching to paid chapters for Deltarune?
