This week, discussions surrounding PlayStation 5 has not ceased since the reveal of its ‘Pro’ model scheduled to come this November. With a price tag of $699, the system offers improvements to its GPU with promises to narrow the divide between quality & performance modes. Part of this is campaigning for enhancements on over 50 titles upon its release this fall.
With showcased titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Demon’s Souls, and Horizon Forbidden West, there are other anticipated titles confirmed as well. At least from the reveal, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one new release confirmed for PS5 Pro upgrades. Another title many players are intending to buy the PS5 Pro for is Grand Theft Auto VI. At least like prior entries, 30hz output is anticipated with the scale the new title is targeting.
And amid promise for more 60 frames per second titles following the PlayStation 5 Pro reveal, it appears that Grand Theft Auto VI is not one of them. Speaking to IGN, Digital Foundry technology editor Richard Leadbetter explains that the still-limited CPU will likely face an absence in higher performance.
Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!). The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps. This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem.
“I think there’s good evidence to suggest that the [GTA 6 trailer from last year] was running on either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X,” Leadbetter argues from the initial reveal. And although the Pro model is to usher more enhancements, a demanding game such as GTA VI likely won’t be on that list. However, Leadbetter does extend to not take his word as fact since nothing has yet to be confirmed.
“Of course, all bets are off if Rockstar is targeting 60fps on the standard PS5 – but we’ve seen no evidence so far to suggest it is.” Leadbetter added: “I think the hardware’s certainly capable […] I think [the improvements will] be quite cool actually, assuming the extra 45 percent of GPU power is fully available to existing games.”
While more has yet to be confirmed for Grand Theft Auto VI as of yet, there is one good sign for the title. In a recent string of rumors, insider Jason Schreier did notify that the chances of a delay for the game is nowhere in sight. While it is not officially in the clear, it is safe from the current stories online. You can read the full report by heading here.
