Over the course of a few months, the attitude of publishing conglomerate Embracer Group/THQ Nordic has completely shifted. Notorious for mass acquiring talent across the globe has begun a new initiative to cut costs and that also comes with the chances to studios shuttering. It indicated such in a restructuring plan this past summer.
In September, the firm elaborated on the approach further which did only solidify that some teams are to face closure. One of the most surprising happens to be legacy projects such as Volition as well as Free Radical Design. However, other teams were sold off to break even like Saber Interactive which was bundled with 4A Games & Zen Studios.
Another concerned developer in the crosshairs is Gearbox. Acquired back in 2021, there was uncertainty left as to the direction this will lead for the Borderlands company. But in a new letterhead, the firm reveals that it will be now joining 2K under the wing of Take-Two Interactive.
“Take-Two and 2K have demonstrated repeatedly their commitment to our engine of generating creativity, happiness, and profit. We set the bar for interactive entertainment and achieved remarkable results with groundbreaking, record-setting games when we worked together at arm’s length as partners,” CEO Randy Pitchford writes.
Alongside a blockbuster set to release later this summer, Borderlands is on the cusp of another mainline installment. Although not officially confirmed, Pitchford in an interview with IGN does certainly indicate another project in the universe is being worked on currently.
