Among the always growing lineup of release from Nintendo, 2022 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated timeframes yet for the firm and its platform. The billboard release that avid fans are excited the most to get their hands on is the sequel for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Although there is no complete understanding for the direction of the follow-up, the second installment is set to come later on this year.

Additionally, there are other first-party launches taking place in 2022. Later this spring, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is slated to ship for the Nintendo Switch. But for players in search for a truly action-pack adventure – Bayonetta 3 is also on the way to release in 2022 as well. After its initial 2017 announcement, the game is on the horizon to release.

But out of left field, a tip for another potential first-party title on Nintendo Switch has released. Through an annual predictions story over at gamesindusrty.biz, Katan Games’ Dr. Serkan Toto speculates the next entry for the Mario Kart series is on the way to release. He goes to disclose that the game is actively being worked on.

I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year. On mobile, Nintendo has been very silent since Mario Kart Tour’s launch in 2019, but I think 2022 is when we will see an established IP arriving on smart devices again.

For the extended Mario Kart IP, Toto also indicates plans to further establish the series on mobile beyond the already successful Mario Kart Tour. Currently, Mario Kart 8 stands to be the most sold release on Nintendo Switch as per the firm’s latest financial report. Reflecting on the Nintendo Wii U, it is also the top selling on that system too.

The significance of Mario Kart, however, goes beyond just sales for Nintendo’s latest platform. In a previous report from NPD Group, it is revealed that Mario Kart is the most successful racing series in the United States. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you hoping the next Mario Kart game releases in 2022?
