Previously, there were claims made that suggested Nintendo would be pursuing a successor to the beloved Nintendo Game Boy Color release, Metroid Fusion. Additionally, the rumor was later corroborated by notorious leaker @New_WabiSabi later on which further fueled excitement for a new, unannounced game. Following the release of Metroid: Samus Returns in 217, fans were left hungry for a fully new release.
Back in May, a claim surfaced suggesting that Nintendo would be tackling a new 2D Metroid release. Although the game is in similar fashion to what previous claims were based on, it did not verify the previous statements. But during the Nintendo E3 Direct, the firm unveiled Metroid Dread. In a following interview with Polygon, Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto verified Metroid Fusion’s inspiration in the new release.
“That would be Metroid Fusion, and that would be the SA-X gameplay,” a translator said. “[…] The whole entire concept hasn’t changed over these 15 years. Really, it was that Samus, this powerful warrior, would be confronted with some overwhelming enemy that would chase her. That was the idea.” Sakamoto also hints at more game could come following Dread’s release.
Nobody wants the Metroid series to end, and we know that. We ourselves don’t want that either. But we just want people to know that there is some kind of new episode that is waiting in the works, and we want you to look forward with what we do with that next — but there are no specifics now.
Specifically, Sakamoto pressed that the story has been stretched out regarding the plot between Samus and the Metroids. While Metroid Dread concludes on the journey regarding that story arc, Sakamoto clarifies that the team is possibly searching to investigate and brainstorm the next chapter for the series following the new release later this year.
This week, Nintendo unveiled the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. While similar in structure to the Nintendo Switch internally – aside from the 64 GB storage, new display, and wired LAN port for the upgraded dock – it is the same. Metroid Dread was a marketed release for the hardware and is possible to receive a special edition perhaps. You can read the initial report by heading here.
