Come this June will mark the five-year anniversary for The Last of Us Part II. While controversial in its choice of story, the game went on to dethrone The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as the most awarded release. Although there has been radio silence on the state of the series for a new release, Naughty Dog was initially working on a multiplayer experience – Factions II. It was discovered recently that comments by Bungie gave Naughty Dog cold feet to further pursue a live-service game. And with plans to release shaping for April 2025 for season 2 of the HBO television series, Neil Druckmann speaking to Variety reveals that the current roadmap for The Last of Us Part III might not be properly realized. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it,” Druckmann says.
Despite the team just canceling its live-service and kickstarting its new IP, there has been no established plans for The Last of Us Part III. In the past, Druckmann did share a prequel title was drafted for the universe. But, it was instead repurposed into an episode for the HBO series in season 1, ‘Look for the Light’.
On the topic of questioning the direction for The Last of Us, the same conversation was recently spun for the TV show.
