HBO Executive Says The Last Of Us Looks To Have A Four Season Runtime

At the time in 2023, The Last of Us was an event release on HBO Max. The streamer then (now Max) face record viewership for the airing of the first episode of 4.7 million viewers – the second highest viewing for a new show. And it did not take long for HBO to green light a second season. By the end of the year, the show did receive eight Oscars for the execution of the video game adaptation.

Looking ahead, it was revealed by Neil Druckmann that three seasons are already greenlit for The Last of Us. And with there only being two games, how HBO plans to tackle the show with The Last of Us Part II between two seasons will be interesting. Additionally, Druckmann did state that a prequel game was considered at one point, but instead used as a basis for episode ‘Look for the Light’ from the first season.

Further on in 2025, The Last of Us Season 2 is set to air this April. And with another season already confirmed to be on the way, the end game for The Last of Us is still uncertain as of writing. In a report from Deadline, HBO executive vice president Francesca Orsi says four season is the current plan for The Last of Us.

“We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.” Understanding that The Last of Us Part II is a very story-rich release, at least two seasons seems appropriate. As for Season 4, it is unsure how HBO will tackle it until we understand how Season 2 ends.

Similarly, showrunners for Fallout also gave a roadmap for its television series at Amazon Prime Video too. Last year, Graham Wagner & Geneva Robertson-Dworet shared at least five seasons are expected to come from the TV show. You can read the full report by heading here.
