Exploring possibilities for new opportunity at Netflix, the entertainment streaming platform for movies and television is now branching over into video games. With previous reports nodding at the idea, it was in fall 2021 that Netflix officially entered into the market with Netflix Games: a free feature to current subscribers of the service. Following the launch of the new program, the firm has continued its devotion to the latest ambition.

Ahead of the launch for Netflix Games when the feature was still in beta for select regions, Netflix announced to be acquiring Night School Studios (Oxenfree, Afterparty). But, the plans for game studio purchases has yet to cease just yet. This week the firm went on to reveal its next buyout for Next Games which is responsible for Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales.

In a new report from The New York Times, Netflix is also pursuing casual titles like trivia with inspiration from the ever-popular Trivia Crack. With one executive eager on the new project dubbed ‘Trivia Quest’ from his time enjoying bar trivia, Netflix is ambitious to tackle the strict competition whilst integrating streaming TV to the mix.

“We know that there is constant competition,” Netflix vice president of interactive and comedy Andy Weil said. “But this is a new experience, particularly for streaming TV.” Trivia Quest is said to commence next month in April 2022 and will be airing a new episode each day that month for viewers to participate in. With 24 questions in total – 12 standard and 12 hard questions stretching across over a dozen categories.

“Netflix loves the social experience of in-person trivia. We don’t think the two experiences are mutually exclusive. We want people to talk about Trivia Quest with their friends and compete for top scores,” Weil explains in further detail when speaking to The New York Times. Similarly, it appears that this ambition is also shared by Microsoft where platform lead Phil Spencer has briefly told it is interested in revisiting 1vs100.
