The reach from Microsoft for more users is no secret in its aim beyond traditional Xbox. Although the console space is one option, users can also explore games on its platform through other means including cloud streaming or PC. Even former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida pressed on the reasoning. “Looking at the install base of Xbox hardware, it’s kind of natural to understand what they are doing, and it’s pretty straightforward.”
Despite the draw back in demand for its consoles, Microsoft remains proud in Xbox Cloud Streaming & Game Pass numbers as per its earnings call this winter. Additionally, the firm is also in its infancy for a mobile peripheral – ‘Project Keenan’. Other mobile endeavors includes smartphones; the firm previously pressed that purchasing via the Xbox app would be nearing its launch very soon.
Now this week, Microsoft officially presses on the matter. Already with the Xbox Mobile app store being established in 2024, plans to roll out in-app purchasing for games are to be arriving in the April 2025 update. Other features includes more Remote Play options for the Xbox ecosystem as well.
“Players will soon be able to buy games and add-on content, join Game Pass, and redeem Perks directly from the Xbox app on mobile. Be ready to play on day one by pre-ordering games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and then set it to pre-install on Xbox consoles from the app. […] Players will also be able to join Game Pass directly from the Xbox app,” Xbox services marketing senior product marketing manager Dean Shimabukuro says.
“Players can now play any game installed on their console by visiting xbox.com/remoteplay on any device with a supported web browser. […] In addition to streaming from the web, players will soon be able to access Xbox remote play on more devices, including supported Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets.”
