Private Division Not To Publish The Outer Worlds Sequel, Microsoft At Helm For Future Releases Suggesting Possible Xbox Exclusivity

For Obsidian Entertainment’s future, many are already looking ahead in anticipation for its next highly-anticipated title, Avowed. Announced nearly a year ago, the firm since the unveiling has remained silent on the project. But, Xbox insider @klobrille on Twitter interpreted claims for the game to be “denser” than Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim atop of mod support to ship for the game at launch.

However, there are also plans for the developer to pursue a follow-up to 2019’s The Outer Worlds. Previously, Niko Partners’ David Ahmad indicated that a sequel is on the way already, he told back in October. The bigger question is if the game will be coming to Xbox exclusively or not. In the past, Xbox Game Studios lead Matt Booty told that “From what we’ve seen of The Outer Worlds, my hope is that it’s something that we can build.”

He adds, “That it really becomes an enduring franchise that really starts to grow and that we can help expand.” In a new statement from a Private Division spokesperson, the publisher for The Outer Worlds, the games that are to follow will be published under Microsoft, Gamsutra transcribed.

The Outer Worlds, including the upcoming release of Murder on Eridanos DLC on Nintendo Switch. Private Division is still supporting and marketing Moving forward, Obsidian and Microsoft will be publishing future iterations in the franchise, and we’re absolutely thrilled to see where they take it.

The details come following the recent Take-Two Interactive earnings call which revealed The Outer Worlds selling more than 3 million copies since its fall 2019 launch. But now with the firm’s future in the hand of Microsoft in the acquisition’s post-era plans, the series could find more to thrive upon leading forward. Especially now with Xbox Game Pass evolving beyond Xbox, the developer is to find a larger influx for the next title.

Back in March, it was discovered that enhancements were patched in for The Outer Worlds. While originally advertised for a client administered for Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S primarily, PlayStation 5 users found upgrades for that version as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
