Believe it or not, Stadia despite the online slander it receives on a daily basis is being backed by notable pundits within the gaming industry. Coming from Take Two-Interactive, CEO Stauss Zelnick shares that the platform – more so streaming as a whole – will be the way the industry is heading in the coming future. “Streaming technology is upon us, Zelnick tells GameSpot during the interview.

It was not too long before that Xbox head Phil Spencer also made a similar statement. Spencer back in February when talking with Protocol told the outlet that the firm’s focus in competition is not towards Sony or even Nintendo; it’s Facebook, Amazon, and Google. Spencer is aware of the technological innovations that the companies are capable of and acknowledges that could be troublesome to Xbox Game Pass alongside the coming Project xCloud.

Looking at Sony, the firm despite holding a 2:1 ration in users on their current PlayStation 4 is unable to gain superiority in game streaming with only two million users reported for PlayStation Now. On the other side, Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass this past quarter acquired 10 million subscribers between its console and PC iterations of the service.

Refocusing back to Zelnick’s stance, he does acknowledge that Stadia is currently in a rut, but is confident the service will overcome the drought later on. It was reported following the initial release of the service that Stadia only received 175K installs for the service’s mobile application: the app essentially is a necessity to use Stadia and would respectfully record active users.

Anytime you broaden distribution you potentially broaden your audience, which is why we supported the release of Stadia with three titles initially and will continue to support high-quality streaming services as long as the business model makes sense. Over time I believe streaming will work… The belief that streaming was going to be transformative was based on a view that there were loads of people who really had an interest in interactive entertainment, really wanted to pay for it, but just didn’t want to have a console. I’m not sure that turned out to be the case.

“The launch of Stadia has been slow. I think there was some overpromising on what the technology could deliver and some consumer disappointment as a result,” Zelnick adds. Even more, Zelnick explains there can be coexisting platforms where streaming can function either through a subscription-based service (i.e. Xbox Game Pass) or stand as a streaming preference without having to pay ahead like Stadia.

It is also apparent that Amazon is looking to enter this domain in the coming future with the now-delayed Project Tempo. The service would stand closer to what Stadia is through the retail-giant’s jurisdiction. Additionally, the service would also include first-party Twitch integration and unique titles available through Amazon Game Studios. Amazon is already well established on its own, but bridging that platform to the approaching service could be a big threat to the pioneered landscape in the long run.

What do you think about Zelnick’s statement on Stadia?
