Although it was not entirely a surprise, HBO’s The Last of Us became a major hit earlier in 2023 to kick off the year. Debuting with 4.7 million viewers, it was evident a franchise was to come for the new series starring Pedro Pascal & Bella Ramsey. Instantly, it was greenlit for Season 2 only a couple episodes into the show’s debut as well.
Even more, the series is already aimed for a grander scale with three seasons carved out for The Last of Us. With Season 1 being a retelling of the first game, Season 2 & 3 will divide the storyline for The Last of Us Part II. Additionally, there was also mentions of a prequel show that was later canceled, according to Neil Druckmann.
This week, Hollywood commemorates the industry’s releases and The Last of Us made it into the nominations at The Oscars and The Golden Globes. In total, it won eight awards. At The Oscars, it received awards for:
Outstanding Guest Actor
Outstanding Guest Actress
Outstanding Main Title Design
Outstanding Picture Editing for a Drama Series
Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup
Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie
Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series
Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series
Noted, these were the entirety of what The Last of Us won from both shows. In an unfortunate turn of events, the three nominations it faced for The Golden Globes were instead taken by HBO’s Succession. Those awards were Best Drama, Best Leading Actor, and Best Leading Actress. Regardless, eight Oscars is nothing to shrug off compared to the impressive output in 2023 from the industry.
Similarly, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 faced the same fate – at least at The Game Awards. In total, seven nominations were dished for The Insomniac Games sequel and it left empty-handed to the likes of Alan Wake 2 & Baldur’s Gate 3. You can read the full report by heading here.
