Predating back to E3 2019 introduced a new mobile experience from Ubisoft, Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad. At the time, the publisher believed a new title could explore the mobile platform whilst bridging all namely Tom Clancy franchises into one. In that, Splinter Cell, The Division, Ghost Recon, and Rainbow Six could all diverge into a free-to-play title for smart phones.
More recently, Ubisoft continues to believe in that pursuit with the announcement of xDefiant. Previous to that, it was reported that the new title would be a conglomerate of The Division/Splinter Cell/Ghost Recon into a new action-packed project codenamed ‘Battlecat’. Following its announcement, Ubisoft revealed the new game will be a continuously supported first-person shooter delving across all Tom Clancy IPs.
And as xDefiant is starting to settle its roots for later on, Ubisoft announces that the previous Elite Squad will soon be no more coming this fall in a new reveal recently.
We are announcing we will no longer be releasing new content for Elite Squad. Today’s update will be our last, and on October 4th, 2021 we will shut the servers down.
This was not an easy decision, but after exploring multiple options with our teams, we came to the conclusion that it was no longer sustainable. We want to assure you all that we really gave it our best, especially with big updates like Season 2, and it was a truly rewarding experience to work with you, our passionate community!
We sincerely hope that you have enjoyed playing with us as much as we have enjoyed making the game and engaging with you all on social media and Discord. We hope that some of you stick around with us and have fun reaching level 70 and unlocking all of the soldiers you can before we say goodbye.
Despite the game’s early announcement back in 2019, it continued to stick around through early public testing for majority of 2020 until shipping in August of last year. So coming this October – the month the game will shut down – the game will be roughly one year old when meeting its unfortunate demise.
Elsewhere in a similar situation, Nintendo announced the closure of Dr. Mario World. After only going live for nearly two years, the firm shared to be shutting down the entire experience coming November. You can read the full report by heading here.
