Undead Labs Collaborates With The Coalition On Unreal Engine 5 For State Of Decay 3, State Of Decay 2 Welcomed 11 Million Players

In the long-stretch of what is coming from Xbox Game Studios, State of Decay 3 is one of the anticipated releases to be announced. Developer Undead Labs made the reveal pre-dating back to June 2020, but word on the game has remained minimal since then. However, the team has been discovered to be working on new technology for the new project. One previous job listing revealed the new project is utilizing Unreal Engine 5 as the new proprietary engine.

The announcement was made prior to the release of the latest Epic Games suite, but that is not all in terms of the prolonged wait for the new entry. According to a report done by Kotaku, internal controversies and poor management at Undead Labs is to blame for little updates on State of Decay 3. Problems amassed enough for Microsoft to actually intervene later on in 2021 following the game’s announcement.

In a statement from Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty, Undead Labs is now collaborating with The Coalition in terms of Unreal Engine 5. The partnership does make sense since a majority of what The Coalition is now originated as Epic Games before forming the new Xbox team. You can view the segment in the video below:

“The’re working with The Coalition up in Vancouver, a Gears of War studio, and using some of the technology around Unreal 5 and some of the stuff before in Gears of War to bring that into State of Decay,” he says. “We spent all day down at Undead Labs which is in Seattle which is great getting the update of State of Decay 3. […] In addition to that, State of Decay 2 just continues to grow its user base […] I think we hit 11 million life to date players.”

This shows to be a continuous trend for many of the live-service titles that continues to roll out at Microsoft. Earlier this year we learned that Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded officially reached 10 million. Not only that, but Rare’s Sea of Thieves also met a new milestone as well properly welcoming 25 million users to its game as well before that.

Additionally, Xbox Game Studios teams prototyping Unreal Engine 5 ahead of the launch for the suite is no secret either. We already learned that Ninja Theory on Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga is utilizing the system alongside InXile Entertainment on its upcoming Project Cobalt title. Most surprising is that the upcoming The Outer Worlds 2 is also using Unreal Engine 5. You can read the full report by heading here.
