When looking at the current onslaught of live service titles available, the file sizes of these titles continue to grow out of proportion. Especially for free titles, it is odd to think how much content is in a game that you do not need to put a single ounce of currency to unlock. But despite that, these properties are normally expected to swell as more content, modes, and events drop for the respected game.
Howbeit, the studios behind these games are looking for ways to maintain the integrity of content available while simultaneously reducing the space requirement of said title. Thankfully, that has been done for Epic Games’ Fortnite – at least, on PC that is.
In a new patch that was issued to the PC version of Epic Games’ most namely battle royale, the game has dropped its space needed by roughly 60 GB, the team shares on Twitter.
Now, those who play the game with keyboard & mouse will find the title sitting at 27 GB. Epic Games also promises that future patch work/updates will also be smaller to install as well. This is said to result with more hard drive space, of course, alongside better load times all around for PC users onwards.
While the recent work has only been situated to the PC version, console players only hope the same can be said for their preferred system also. Especially with the next-generation version underway and the enhancements it will carry, it would be very nice to receive a smaller client install when welcomed onto the new systems.
In relevance to smaller system required space for games, Microsoft pledges to reduce the size of its first-party titles leaning forward to the new console lifecycle. When speaking to Kotaku, Xbox lead Phil Spencer discloses that Xbox Game Studios will integrate more efforts to reduce game sizes. You can read the full report by heading here.
