Among the masses of PlayStation 5 exclusives on the way to the newest system on the market, it was a surprise to learn that Horizon Forbidden West is not one of them. In a previous announcement from Sony Interactive Entertainment, it was told that the Guerrilla Games’ title and Sackboy: A Big Adventure will be out on PlayStation 4 as well.

Additionally, the PlayStation company is still unclear about the game’s release. While the firm did press that the title is expected to arrive sometime in the second half of this year, a specific release date is still undetermined. But, the game studio working on Horizon Forbidden West continues to be transparent with its fans. In that, it shares the game is aimed for the PlayStation 4, but will find better optimizations on the newer system.

But according to GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb, the sequel is not on the way to release this year as anticipated. Speaking on his GrubbSnax Premium Show on Giant Bomb, and transcribed by Video Game Chronicles, he explains that a new PlayStation broadcast is to take place in September, and there Sony Interactive Entertainment will reveal a 2022 release window.

I’ve heard, not certain, but I’ve heard that something’s coming in September and… I’m trying to debate if I want to be the one to say this… I think “that game” is going to get delayed to 2022. I don’t know for sure, I think it’s still undecided, but I think it’s leaning towards Horizon Forbidden West in 2022.

I think they’ll have a September State of Play to say, “here are the other things we’re going to have in the fall, here’s a bunch of exciting stuff, don’t worry”, but then I think Horizon Forbidden West is going to be 2022.

Atop of the statement from Grubb on his show, Bloomberg Tech’s Jason Schreier also corroborates the claim by further echoing a 2022 delay is to be in place for Horizon Forbidden West. Schreier continues by stating that sources familiar with the delay are aiming to ship the game sometime in Q122 for Horizon Forbidden West.

This is not the first instance of a PlayStation title being delayed to next year in recent weeks. Previously, it was told by Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan that the next God of War entry is slated for 2022. With the addition of Gran Turismo 7 which was delayed previous to that, both titles are also cross-generation releases for both PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5 as well.

Although Horizon Forbidden West is likely to arrive later than expected, corporate Sony aims to utilize the new release in reinforcing its PlayStation Now subscription service. The ambition includes the new Guerrilla Games title alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games also. You can read the full report by heading here.
