While Microsoft’s remains to commit to Xbox hardware, it is no secret on the firm’s urgency to explore more avenues for a wider user base. As a result, the push for cloud streaming has been a forefront the past few years. However, it will not overshadow its original consumer base, the Xbox firm promised. As early as 2022, there has been record usage for then-Project xCloud in data gathered by Microsoft.
This continues to fuel the sentiment on this endeavor as Phil Spencer has went on record saying that mobile is the lifeline needed for Xbox to remain. And the push has continued since then. Microsoft shared growth is in the ‘double-digits’ with roughly 10 percent of users playing exclusively on touch screen. More recent data shares that its biggest market for this effort has been out of east Asia primarily.
Now with a few years behind the Xbox Cloud Gaming endeavor, Microsoft shares new data that supports the pioneering that Xbox has been working towards. From a GDC panel – that was recently uploaded online – it reveals that newer generations are pivoting towards multi-device play.

“You can see here just some age range from different generations and how many of them are playing on multiple devices. And with Gen Z and Gen Alpha, more than 50% are currently play[ing] games on multiple devices. And for Gen Alpha, gaming is their number on leisure time activity,” Microsoft general manager of content and dev readiness Chris Charla says.
“And so we really thing the opportunity is there to serve this need by enabling players to play the same game on multiple devices. Part of that has been our stream your own game opportunity. […] And we’ve actually seen a lot of players, as soon as it’s launched, actually buying and playing exclusively via cloud.” Previously, Microsoft has pressed on cross-buy being its focus as stated by Phil Spencer earlier in February.
The Xbox firm even entering into 2025’s GDC also used the opportunity for “Gaming Anywhere” to further cement its sentiment towards multi-device play. This all plays into the new motion that rolled out earlier in April which now provides direct purchasing on the Xbox mobile app. You can read the full report by heading here.
