Throughout the majority of this console generation, Microsoft’s performance as a company regarding backwards compatibility has been phenomenal. In contrast to its competitors on the subject matter, the two do not come close in favor of its efforts to put the consumer’s interest.
Although Nintendo Switch does offer virtual libraries for both the NES & SNES, it is a service you have to pay an additional fee to obtain. That does not include the ability to use previous generation physical copies or carried over purchases from prior hardware alike on Xbox One. And Sony’s PlayStation 4 altogether does not include the feature at the slightest this generation.
Regardless, in anticipation for the next system – Xbox Series X – Microsoft shared previously that roughly a thousand titles will be available when the console launches later this holiday season. Now in a new report, Microsoft discloses that the same next-generation console will have the entire Xbox One library in mind for when the new unit ships later this year.
You will be able to play four generations of games on Xbox Series X on day one. That makes it the largest launch lineup for any new console ever, with thousands of games to play. Our backward compatibility engineers have spent years devising innovative ways for modern, next-gen technology to make the games library you’re building today even better, at no additional cost and with no work from developers. It’s our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.

The ambitions set by Microsoft can also be applied to cross-generation purchases. In that, the firm’s in-house Smart Delivery feature will allow players to continue playing their games on Xbox Series X without having to purchase new titles. Additionally, the firm has clarified that physical copies as well as titles on Xbox Game Pass will both be available through the feature if supported on launch day.
It was earlier today that Microsoft clarified that the some models of Xbox One will be discontinued – including the Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition – but for those looking to migrate to the newer hardware will not leave behind their games they purchased on current systems.
In the same post, Microsoft disclosed that Project xCloud will officially be coming this September. The service is also reported to be available via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for subscribers to access the myriad of titles on the platforms including first-party entries as well.
