As of late, the next Titanfall project from developer Respawn Entertainment has yet to properly be picked up off the ground. And it is not due to creative limitations or a lacking favorability from the team’s following, it’s just bad timing. The studio has confirmed since the debut of Apex Legends, a spin-off set in the same universe, that a third mainline installment is not on the way.
Even after the team stating that there is no project on the table currently, the question continues to resurface every few months to see if anything changes. Like in April last year, the team clarified that the team focus will shift towards the development of its inspired battle royale so overextended crunch does not consume the wellbeing of employees at Respawn Entertainment.
Now in a new interview with IGN, studio head Vince Zampella again shares that there is still not game on the horizon for the series. He does state that Respawn is eager to return at some point, but now is not appropriate for what’s currently at hand.
There’s nothing currently in development. But it’s always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [Apex Legends’ updates]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We’ll see if I can make that happen.
While we are met with yet another instance of the series being on hold by Respawn Entertainment, this is definitely not the first the team does share to miss returning to work on a new entry. During a financial report back in October, Electronic Arts stated that the franchise is certainly not to be forgotten despite its current absence. And while it is not entirely gone since Apex Legends continues to grow, players can expect more support for the online-only title until the series officially returns.
In the latter of the conversation, Zampella also commented on the approaching EA Play Live that is slated for later this June. While he cannot say what exactly will be at the digital show, he does urge it is something related to the developer. “It’s safe to assume that yes, you might see some things from Respawn at EA Play.”
What exactly that is will have to be discovered next month. Currently, the team is still working on the ever growing battle royale as you would expect atop of an anticipated virtual reality project. Sometime later this year the team is expected to ship Medal of Honor: Above & Beyond for Oculus devices, so perhaps that will be shown at the June showcase maybe.
Are you still waiting for a new Titanfall game?
