When conventional next-generation machines are distributed across several markets, the frontrunner SKU typically sells more since it’s the headlining model for the platform. However, Microsoft believed it will cash in with a cost-effective console which introduces the Xbox Series S. Prior to the release of both Series consoles, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer was confident that the disc-less model would outperform its beefier sibling.

Currently, that already appears to be the case. In a report from Ampere Analysis, the Xbox Series S already outperformed the Xbox Series X in “several key markets” due to limited production of the powerhouse hardware. Even this past Black Friday, the Xbox Series S also sold more than Nintendo Switch alongside PlayStation 5 in a surprise turn of events.

In a new report from Famitsu Video Game Chronicles transcribed, it is revealed that Xbox Series S is to blame for this past month’s success in Japan. For the most part, PlayStation hardware is a dominant player in the market alongside Nintendo, but, Xbox holds a very small role in the competition. From @GameDataLibrary on Twitter, this instance is lesser than ten times since the birth of Xbox.

From the Famitsu sales report, PlayStation 5 sold 2,693 units in Japan. However, Xbox Series S sold 6,015 units nearly tripling the turnout of its competitor. But, Xbox Series X only pushed out 105 units despite the advantage its smaller sibling obtained. It was only a few months back that Xbox Series already outsold the Xbox One in that region. For Xbox One to obtain 100K units sold took three years which Xbox Series managed to do in only one.

Noted, Xbox Series X is reportedly still leading in sales for that territory. However, there is a likeliness that will shift to Xbox Series S fairly soon. @Genki_JPN recorded as of late April that Xbox Series X sold roughly 95K units whilst the Xbox Series S sold just over 88K at the time. Ultimately, it appears that certain hardware sells mainly due to availability of the console.

As for other positives regarding the Xbox Series S, there is a possibility users can play physical copies on their consoles. While there is no disc drive for this SKU, Microsoft has patented a new feature to use an external player to obtain a license for the game to install a digital copy. Are you surprised by the continued success of the Xbox Series S?
