Nintendo Switch 2 Is No Longer A Rumor, Features Backwards Compatibility With A 2025 Release Window

For more than seven years since the initial release of the Nintendo Switch, fans have been eager to see what the successor for the new hardware will deliver. Although a new generation is expected, many did anticipate a pro model of sorts to be released at some point. In one statement, Nintendo clarified that a reveal would be made by the end of the fiscal year. Additionally, the firm went on to press that production will be ramped up to fight resellers entering the new lifecycle.

Entertaining what the new system will be called, it was claimed online by one user on Reddit, NextHandheld, that the system would officially be titled the ‘Nintendo Switch 2’. Other insiders familiar with the new console also shared that the system would be revealed on Thursday, January 16th. Also from leaker NateTheHate, titles including Halo: The Master Chief Collection is planned to release on the Nintendo Switch 2.

And as claimed by the insider, Nintendo did properly reveal the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it is focused solely on the hardware and does leave out what possible games will be featured for the new console aside from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe showcased in the trailer. You can watch the reveal trailer in the video below:

“Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date,” the press release reveals. Also, dedicated Nintendo Direct has been scheduled to take place on April 2nd later this spring.

There will also be specified dates for the ‘Nintendo Switch 2 Experience’ for fans to test out the hardware ahead of its release. In North America, these events will be held in New York (April 4-6), Los Angeles (April 11-13), Dallas (April 25-27),  and Toronto (April 25-27). While the Nintendo Switch is out the door this year, the system did just outsell the PlayStation 2 officially in the United States. You can read the full report by heading here.
