This month, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise over at Paramount is set to expand further with the debut of the first connected television series – Knuckles. A six-episode miniseries, the TV show will ship all episodes at once on April 26th. Of course, that is only the first part as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be arriving in theaters later this winter. Recently, the film just wrapped up filming with work now underway on post-production.

Some of the exciting additions for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the introduction for Shadow the Hedgehog. We’ve previously seen set photos pointing towards the character’s city, Westopolis. Additionally, a separate report disclosed that Crush40’s ‘Live & Learn’ was signed on by Paramount to use in the film. For those unfamiliar, it’s the climatic song that plays at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 once both Sonic & Shadow team up.

In a new interview with Paste Magazine, executive producer Toby Asher elaborates on the scale of the property. With television now in the equation, he explains that the movies will be the major driving points similar to Disney/Marvel’s Avengers.

We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies. We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events.

They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters. And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.

Previously, Asher has teased the expansive opportunities that Sonic the Hedgehog could follow after the success from 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. At the time, he elaborated that there are plans are underway for a cinematic universe at Paramount. “We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world.”

To give an understanding on the direction the property can pursue, a recent discovery helped paint a picture. From one eagle-eyed fan on X, a copyright filing reveals a list of titles permitted by Sega to use in the films. The list includes Sonic Adventure, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, and even 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you surprised by Asher’s recent statement?
