After what felt like forever since the announcement of the project, Sony Pictures’ Borderlands film is set to arrive later this August. Just last week, the first official trailer for the upcoming movie released giving a taste of what a live-action Pandora looks like and it truly embraces plenty of the characteristics from the games that players love.
One of the biggest aspects for the new film is the number of castings for the overall picture. The list included a star-studded ensemble including Cate Blanchette, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janina Gavankar, and more for the movie. What interests many fans is where exactly does the video game adaptation stand in the overall timeline. Because it appears to follow the path of the first game, but certain characters are absent.
Well, according to Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford it is in its own timeline. In fact, it’s the start of a whole cinematic universe, he tells IGN – a trend that many firms are beginning to adopt as of late.
So this isn’t Borderlands 1. This isn’t Borderlands 2. The Borderlands movie is the first of the Borderlands Cinematic Universe and you’ll see some characters from some of the different parts of what you might know from the video games. But it also gives us an opportunity to get deeper and expand a little bit. You never met the CEO of the Atlas Corporation and you will meet that character for the first time in the Borderlands movie and his name is Deukalian Atlas.
More on the matter of the independent timeline separate from the games, this is a growing trend with game adaptations. Previously, we saw this with the likes of the Paramount+ show Halo. Additionally, the new Gears of War film is also said to be structured the same. The only firm to break that trend recently is the approaching Fallout TV series in which Todd Howard encourages expanding its universe with the adaptation.
Upon also speaking with IGN, Pitchford does press a new Borderlands game is in the works. While not outright confirming its Borderlands 4, he does elaborate that Gearbox Software is busy and the new project in the pipeline is its best work yet. You can read the full report by heading here.
