Over at Bethesda, the biggest question is the future of the publisher after its recent acquisition by Microsoft earlier this March. While the firm in 2021 continues to ship games like Deathloop and GhostWire: Tokyo this winter the year following, after is where Microsoft indicates it will be “case-by-case” to determine where new releases will arrive.
So far, Microsoft confirmed two titles from the firm will be unique to Xbox already: Starfield and Redfall. However, there is speculation more is to be exclusively release across the Xbox ecosystem later down the line. Alike Starfield was reported before, the same is also being accounted for The Elder Scrolls VI now. In a previous statement from GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb, the title is to be only on Xbox as well.
While there has yet to be any confirmation on the project since the claim, it was recently when speaking to GQ that Xbox head Phil Spencer verifies the legitimacy of the statement. In the interview, Spencer explains the game is part of a greater package that defines what comes with Xbox.
It’s not about punishing any other platform, like I fundamentally believe all of the platforms can continue to grow. But in order to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to bring the full complete package of what we have. And that would be true when I think about Elder Scrolls VI. That would be true when I think about any of our franchises.
While on the matter of what platforms are to offer, Spencer elsewhere in the discussion explains that PlayStation is not a concern for the ambitions the firm has moving forward. While Sony Interactive Entertainment is a direct industry competitor, Microsoft previously told Amazon & Google is the larger threat. Namely due to its aim for cloud streaming.
Upon elaborating further, Spencer reiterated on prior plans for xCloud: that is to offer a streaming application on smart TVs. At one point, Spencer did reference the possibility of a streaming stick for users to purchase for xCloud. But more recently, the discussion turned to partnering with television manufacturers to be realized. You can read the full report by heading here.
